Club Career
Playing as a midfielder, Foster debuted with Sydney United, Adelaide
City and Marconi Stallions in the National Soccer League (NSL)
before moving to England. His three season stint in England saw
him play with Portsmouth F.C before moving to Crystal Palace F.C.
He played at Palace until the end of the 1999/00
season, playing over 60 games and finished as Captain of the side,
before sustaining serious knee injuries. He then played with Northern
Spirit until retiring in 2003. At 40 years of age, he currently
still plays amateur football in the Eastern Suburbs Premier League
in Sydney, with Sydney University Soccer Football Club.
International Career
Foster earned 29 caps with the Australian national football team,
scoring nine goals and represented Australia at under 17 level
at the 1985 FIFA World Championships in China.
After retirement
Following his retirement, Foster became the chief football analyst
for the SBS football show The World Game, and is remembered for
his passionate commentary during the World Cup Qualifier in November
2005 against Uruguay.
Foster was involved in the award winning SBS coverage
of the 2006 World Cup, which won the SBS football team a Logie
for Most Outstanding Sports Coverage of the year for the Australia/Italy
match. Craig then went on to establish a position as a sports
news presenter with World News Australia and as an anchor for
SBS’s 2008 Olympic Games coverage.
Foster has been a strong advocate for player’s
rights, having served for five years on the PFA (Players Association)
Executive, as a Director of the PFA’s commercial wing, PFAM
(PFA Management), and formerly as Chief Executive of the Player’s
Association. Foster remains a life member of the PFA and a member
of the PFA Technical Committee. He writes a weekly column for
the Sun-Herald, is the only Australian Judge for the Ballon d’Or,
awarded by the prestigious France Football Magazine for the WorPlayer
of the Year, and is an Australia Day Ambassador for the Australia
Day Council.
Always forthright, Craig believes in the importance
of football debate and discussion in building a strong football
culture, and is fearless in his views on how Australian football
can improve. One of these areas, of course, is through the use
of Futsal.
